1. Christian Science Nurses training

The Christian Science Nurses Training School began a CSNA I class on January 6th. Our second CSNA I class starts in August. Here is a link to our full schedule of classes.

2. Paradigm Properties

The BA is pleased to welcome Paradigm Properties as the new management company for our Facilities Department. We look forward to working with them!

3. Vegan menu

A shout out to Chef Mark for his expanded menu of vegan dishes. We’ve always had vegetarian options at each meal. Now many of our vegetarian selections are vegan. The favorite from last week was spinach and cheese enchiladas with cilantro-lime rice and refried beans, and of course salsa and guac.

4. Mild winter

No snow has been good news! We’ve had a couple of significant snowfalls this winter, but intermittent warm weather has melted it all. We love the beautiful snow, but it is great to be able to be out of doors on campus during the middle of winter.

5. Power of Attorney

Everyone should have a Power of Attorney for Health Care (Health Care Proxy). To get you started, check out this information on our website including a sample document with language suited for those choosing Christian Science nursing as an option. Also, Leslie Connery (with title) mentioned in a recent webinar on Medicare that you could email legalinfo@csps.com and request to talk to someone about language appropriate for Christian Scientists in an advance directive such as a Health Care Proxy.

Countless individuals over the last century have come to the refuge of the BA in time of need and found complete healing (audio testimony below). They found within this refuge a reverence for the presence of the Christ, tender skilled care, brotherly love, expectancy of good, and unwavering joy and calm.

Your support has helped significantly to provide this refuge for those in need.  It has helped maintain the availability of our Christian Science nursing services without interruption this past year.

There is still a considerable ways to go to meet the funding required to support our Christian Science nursing services this year. If you are able to give to the BA at this important time, it would mean so much to those we serve. Please consider making a gift today.

In the following healing testimony, this woman contacted a Christian Science practitioner for specific prayerful support, and was also led to come to Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association for Christian Science nursing care.

She found that her gratitude for the spiritual atmosphere, and the loving, selfless care of Christian Science nurses at the BA, contributed greatly to her healing.

It is such a privilege to work at the BA along with the many spiritually minded individuals that support this organization. It is an unusual and challenging time and yet every day I see more joy, kindness, creativity, and resilience expressed across the campus. And there is such gratitude and support from our Field. Our hearts have been touched by the donations, gifts, and loving notes that arrive at the BA. We are so blessed.

5 things you should know about the BA in September

Our active Christian Science nursing services. We are grateful that we continue to be able to admit patients at the BA and to respond to calls for the Visiting Service while staying in compliance with guidelines and restrictions for Brookline and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

CSNAIII (Advanced Christian Science Nursing Arts) started on September 1st. For five weeks Christian Science nurses from California, Missouri, and New Jersey (along with those from the BA) will call the BA home while they participate in the classroom portion of this course. With social guidance and ongoing restrictions in place for Massachusetts, we have needed to be creative and flexible as we set up classroom space. With desks 6 feet apart, we are using the Living Room (below the Chapel) in the Original Building for classroom sessions.

#HALFMYDAF
Through these challenging times, it is rewarding to see the increase in charity and giving back, especially for nonprofits. And this is a time when nonprofits especially can use the added support. The #HALFMYDAF movement caught our attention because over $120 billion is sitting in Donor Advised Funds* and community foundations. A *Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple, flexible and tax-efficient way to give to your favorite charities. A DAF is like a charitable investment account for the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations you care about. These accounts may be held at an investment firm like Fidelity Charitable or a community foundation.

Restoring the portrait of Mrs. EddySo many BA Friends have been checking in on the progress of the restoration of Mrs. Eddy’s portrait that hung in the Reception Room at the BA for many years. The latest update is that the canvas has been cleaned and next week the portrait goes to the framer. And it should be ready to hang in October. We welcome your gifts to finish this wonderful project.

CSNA Graduation is virtual in 2020 – We will be celebrating online this year rather than meeting together in the Chapel for Graduation. Current guidelines do not allow us to gather in one place for our traditional Christian Science Nursing Arts graduation. We will be online with all the graduates and our keynote speaker in November. We will be announcing the exact date in the coming week.

For this year’s Christian Science Nursing Arts graduation, we are looking forward to a special online celebration for the 2020 graduating Christian Science nurses. Last year, in honor of the BA’s 100th anniversary, we invited donations to help the restoration project of this beautiful painting. You still have an opportunity to help put it back on public display!

For many years this portrait of Mrs. Eddy hung over the fireplace in the BA’s Reception area. Now that we’ve upgraded the fireplace with a gas burning smoke-free insert, its safe to put the painting back in its proper place. It is now with the framer and restoration is nearly complete! We only need an additional  $4,120. Simply click the donate button below and add a notation that you want to support the portrait project.Donate

A few fun facts about the portrait:

  • The distinguished Boston portrait painter Margaret F. Richardson was commissioned by The Mother Church to do several portraits of Mrs. Eddy between 1916 and 1934.
  • Richardson used photographs to create her works; she never met Mrs. Eddy, and Mrs. Eddy never posed for her.
  • While Richardson was painting this portrait, she felt she needed to know more about her subject, and so began reading biographies of Mrs. Eddy, as well as Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and other writings.  As a result, she became a student of Christian Science, and always felt that the first commission to paint Mrs. Eddy’s portrait was a transforming experience for her.
  • This particular portrait originally was displayed in the Administration building at The Mother Church.
